Benefits for Alberta and Albertans

In a recent article in the magazine “Economist” dated September 23rd 2006, the provinces of Alberta and its neighbor British Columbia were described as having populations with the highest average level of education in the world. Without question, a highly-educated population creates an enormous opportunity for business growth. At the same time Alberta is suffering from an extreme shortage of labor to fill the needs of the booming economy. In order to maintain long-term economic success, Alberta must maximize the productivity of its workers. The chart below illustrates how a high-speed passenger rail service can save millions of hours each year, time that translates to increased productivity, prosperity and quality of life.

Number of Hours Saved

Over a ten year span, high-speed rail (HSR) can create 31,100,000 person hours of productive time that would otherwise be spent traveling in a car, bus or airplane.

The provincial economy can also expect a positive impact as demonstrated by the experience in Japan during the early years of high-speed rail service. The chart following shows the increase in the number of businesses in the HSR corridor compared to the growth nationally and away from the corridor.

Business Growth

The environment is also a winner with HSR. With the growing world-wide efforts to reduce green-house gases emitted by all sources of transportation vehicles, HSR can be a valuable asset. Any reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide generated is a desirable outcome. Electric high-speed rail is the travel mode which produces the smallest amount of CO2 per seat/kilometer. The following chart shows the relative amounts of CO2 produced by the common modes of travel.
